UPPER WEST SIDE

New York, New York

When couples talk about downsizing after becoming empty-nesters it isn’t always about sizing down but moving up!  BJS-Assoc. was asked to take on the design responsibility of transitioning the couple from their large traditional home in the suburbs to a modern building with five bedroom and 5.5 baths on the Upper West Side.

The new apartment was a traditional white box and the couple wanted to make it feel like a home that they could renovate to suit their individual style.  The layout was a bit closed off and needed to be more open and have better fluidity.

The overall effect was timeless, easygoing but exacting in execution with attention to every detail.  Telling the couple’s story and crafting a space that lives on as their life continues to change and evolve. Stepping into the family room Steves used deeper shades of purples and touches of bronze, woods and brass to differentiate the two spaces. The crowning jewel was creating a rich and romantic dining room which became a treasured place for incorporating the family heirloom rug and paid homage to the beauty and elegance of their former home. The Brutalist inspired handmade Gridlock chandelier was the connector between the modern influence and the nod to the past in a convergence of rich velvet and silks in burgundies, blues and golds.

The challenge for Steves and her team was that the husband and wife had different ideas of how to express their individual styles as well as what memories and belongings they wanted to take from their home in the suburbs. The team needed to do it in a way that suited each of their personalities and desires. Taking clues from each, Steves created the perfect marriage between old and new combined with contemporary and traditional.

Overseeing all aspects of the remodel of the apartment BJS-Assoc. was able to infuse a sense of the warmth of tradition while mixing more modern elements of woods, metals and stone.

The design direction began with a stunning Ombre silk and wool rug in shades of neutrals, greys and purples that spanned the entire length of the living and family room.  To create separation from each of the areas, we designed a defining wall with a two-sided fireplace to encourage privacy and separation while maintaining the quintessential city view. The intention was to design the living room in warm shades of neutrals, with hints of lavenders, purples and violets combined with a pair of lavender and purple glass round tables and a cream lacquer cocktail table mixed with sofas in combinations of creams, grey and purples.
